I wasn't really sure what to expect from the theater version of "Twelfth Night." How good are our student actors? How would they recreate the scenery? The costumes? Would they stay true to Shakespeare's dialogue? Yes to all of the above.
The play was awesome. Well acted, well made, and overall well done. I was thoroughly impressed, and I did not find myself bored at all during the experience. For me the highlight of the play was Sir Toby and Sir Andrew, they really stole the show.
From their wardrobe to their speech Sir Toby and Sir Andrew were dead-on. They were the characters who created the "laugh out loud" scenes. Both of the actors portraying them did a great job and brought their characters to life. Especially the garden scene where the letter is planted for Malvolio. The characters were using potted plants to hide themselves, as well as pillars that were too small and fountains that were too short. Jumping, hooting and hollering they had the entire audience laughing and paying attention.
The other thing I really like about the play is how much it helped with the reading for class. When reading the play for class, sometimes, I would find myself reading things out of context. Things that were meant to be funny I would read as serious or vice versa. Getting to see the Shakespeare play acted out in its entirety really helped to make sense of the whole thing. To be able to hear different voices, observe body language and analyze dialogue tone made the play more understandable. It can be pretty tricky so try and read Shakespeare's work and understand it completely through, the play served as a great aid.
In the end I was glad I saw the play for two reasons. 1- It was awesome, we have some truly talented students on our campus. 2- It was a huge help in understanding the play further. Not a bad deal for a Saturday afternoon matinee.
